He\u2019s a man who knows his onions when it comes to setting up quick cars, having played a central role in creating cars such as the M3. And to make sure the i30N works in reality, it has been honed diligently around the infamous N\u00fcrburgring racetrack.     Both the i30N and the i30N Performance use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine but in different states of tune, accounting for their differing power outputs of 247bhp and 271bhp. They have the same torque at 260lb ft and there\u2019s an overboost function that increases this to 279lb ft for up to 18sec, giving a bit more kick for overtaking.\n\nIn reality, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to discern the Performance version\u2019s extra poke on the road. This means that while the standard car feels every bit as quick as \u2013 if not quicker than \u2013 a Ford Focus ST, the Performance model does lack the monster straight-line pace of more powerful rivals such as the 316bhp Honda Civic Type R and 345bhp Focus RS.\n\nDon\u2019t take that to mean the i30N feels slow, mind; it doesn't. With a relatively crisp accelerator response for their turbocharged engines (the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R, for example, have more lag), plenty of guts from 1500rpm onwards and a willingness to rev out with gusto, both versions feel punchy and exciting.\n\nThey sound good, too, particularly the Performance model, with its standard switchable sports exhaust. Under acceleration, it growls menacingly like an angry mobster, and when you back off spits and bangs erupt from its twin rear tailpipes like reports of Tommy gun fire.\n\nThe six-speed manual gearbox \u2013 there\u2019s no automatic option \u2013 is a sweet thing to use. It hasn\u2019t quite the mechanical delectability of the Civic Type R\u2019s, but it\u2019s not far off. This, and the crisp clutch bite point and meaty, progressive brake pedal, add to the sense that the i30N is a properly sorted car.\n\nAnd this is confirmed the minute you launch it in to a corner and feel the immediacy with which it reacts then settles mid-bend. The i30N has a heavily revised, quicker steering rack than the regular i30 and, if you keep the drive modes in the softest Comfort setting, it weights up nicely and telegraphs little sensations through the rim to give you a feel for the grip beneath you. It gets a little too heavy in the racier modes but, unlike many competitors, you can mix and match the settings to achieve the set-up you desire. For instance, the nicer Comfort steering can be combined with the fiercer acceleratpr response of the wildest N mode.     The standard i30N gets 18in wheels shod with regular tyres, while the Performance model comes on 19in rims with grippier rubber specifically designed for the car. And the more powerful car also gets an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, which meters the power much more effectively to the front wheels, dragging you out of tight turns with less wheel scrabble.     All the buttons and switches are easy to reach, including the standard 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system that sits high up on the dashboard. It is so much better to use than the Civic Type R\u2019s infotainment system, with snappier menus that are easier to grasp. It\u2019s also very well equipped: sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and online connectivity for live traffic, weather and speed camera reports are all standard.     But what we can tell you is how well equipped it is. Very. The i30N offers far more toys than its rivals, with the standard car featuring 18in alloy wheels, LED headlights, sports seats, red brake calipers, automatic lights and wipers, privacy glass, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. That\u2019s on top of the bits we\u2019ve already mentioned, such as adaptive dampers and the excellent infotainment system.\n\nMove up to the Performance model and, as well as the limited-slip differential, 19in wheels, sticky tyres and sports exhaust that make it go quicker and sound better, you add luxuries including leather seats, electric front seats with lumbar adjustment and memory recall.\n\nThe i30N gets the full five-star Euro NCAP rating \u2013 something that the Civic Type R failed to do. You get plenty of safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, a driver fatigue monitor, speed limit display and lane departure warning with lane assist.
